The Dell XPS Gen 5 is Dell’s top-of-the-line gaming and multimedia machine. The featured default clock speeds makes the system fast and dependable for running in a heavily multi-tasking environment or running multi-threaded digital applications. XPS Gen 5 supports a lot of media features like recording TV; authoring and burning DVDs etc. Dell’s Gen 5 is the first system that features the dual-core Pentium Extreme Edition 840 (Pentium EE 840) Processor.

Dell is the biggest OEM in the world. As with any monolithic corporation, its inertia may work against it. We’ll see if the promised XPS OS image changes are still in practice on our new system. We’ve also had serious problems with Dell’s technical support in the past. The XPS is touted as a premium label with premium support. We don’t always get that level of performance, and we’re very interested to see what we get this time around.

Dell calls its XPS desktops and notebooks its luxury brand, and the XPS M1710 comes with the hardware, looks, and price to match that moniker. Most notable about the high-end unit is its nVidia GeForce Go 7900 GTX graphics chip with 512MB of memory. Yep–this notebook has the mobile version of nVidia’s fastest desktop GPU.

The XPS M1710 is Dell’s latest premium gaming and multimedia notebook replacing XPS M170 with added improvements like the Go 7900 graphics. Dell XPS M1710 is available in two colors i.e. ‘formula red’ and ‘metallic black’. The XPS M1710 features a 17 inch widescreen WUXGA LCD, having resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels, with the Dell TrueLife treatment to provide greater contrast and bolder colors. The dimensions of Dell XPS M1710 are 15.5 inch wide, 11.3 inch deep, and 1.6 inch thick, and weighed approximately 8.8 pounds without AC adapter and 10.2 pounds with AC adapter.

The laptop comes well packed in a good-sized black XPS box. The M1710 is wrapped up in a foam sleeve and packed with Styrofoam on each end. The manual and accessories are contained in one box, while the laptop comes packed in another.

The M1710 has improvements over the predecessor M710 notably the Go 7900 graphics, but it stays true to the vision - offer a superb and unique gaming experience in a mobile form factor. We’re going to examine a Metallic Black Armor XPS M1710 configuration today that comes loaded with 2 GB of RAM, a T2600 Core Duo CPU, and a GeForce Go 7900 GS.

For serious gamers looking for an edge on their next opponent, the XPS M1710 offers blazing performance (at least for a single-GPU system) to match its bold looks. With Intel Core Duo processors, nVidia 512MB GeForce Go 7900 GTX graphics technology (by far the most powerful mobile graphics chipset available) and up to 4GB of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM, the XPS M1710 should deliver around 30 per cent better performance than its predecessor - the Inspiron XPS Gen 2.
